The native range of this species is Temp. Northern Hemisphere to Colombia, W. Bolivia to S. South America, Nigeria to Kenya, S. India. It is a helophyte and grows primarily in the temperate biome. It is used as animal food, a poison and a medicine, has environmental uses and for food.
