The native range of this species is SE. Mexico to Venezuela, S. Florida to Caribbean, Tropical & Subtropical Asia to N. Australia. It is an annual or subshrub and grows primarily in the subtropical biome. It is has environmental uses and social uses, as animal food and a medicine and for food.
